Desert truffles (Tefezia spp) are distinct from the high value European truffle species but still have a large market place for their culinary use. At prices roughly 1/10th of the European truffles they are also highly accessible.
In season now, these desert truffles are found in arid regions and can be cultivated. Often found after rainstorms and where there are cracks in the ground, several tribes have named them ‘lightening’ or ‘thunder’ truffles. Some people claim that when lightening hits the ground, it causes cracks and the truffles form. Whilst lighting strikes can be beneficial for the fungus, by providing nutritional enrichment to the soil, fruiting is most likely linked to the sudden rainfall events that accompanies such thunderstorms.
