June 13, 2015Chinese truffles, a threat to plantations?
Recent News articles originating in Italy highlight a potential threat to the European truffle industry. Here at Mycorrhizal Systems what we have suspected for a long time has been confirmed, that the Chinese truffle (Tuber indicum) is growing in Europe. Recent analysis of a plantation in Italy has confirmed presence of the Chinese truffle. This is of particular worry as the Chinese truffle can out-compete the more revered black winter truffle.
We have long suspected that this will become a major problem which is why we offer winter-truffle trees with DNA certification to eliminate any chance of the trees containing Chinese truffles and to preserve the future of each of our plantations. Thankfully all our commercial winter truffle plantations from America to Africa have undergone this certification step, and will continue to do so!
