First successful cultivation of Truffles in Ireland.

 

 

 

 

We are happy to announce that in November 2021, we successfully produced the first cultivated truffles in Ireland. Truffle cultivation remains niche in Ireland, with only a handful of sites, but we hope that this development will kick-start the industry. 

 

The successful cultivation occurred about 100 km outside of Dublin on an orchard planted with around 1,000 of our truffle trees. The site was planted around 10 years ago and had never been hunted, until now. On the first two visits with a scent trained dog, just under 500g of truffles were harvested. The site is currently overgrown with brambles and other weeds, so it will now be tidied up and harvesting will start in earnest next year, with more frequent visits by the scent-trained dog.   

 

The cultivated truffle was a black native species known as summer, autumn or Burgundy truffle Tuber aestivum syn. uncinatum and the crop was very well perfumed. With only a handful of truffle orchards in Ireland, much more needs to be planted to make this a viable industry for the country. But, with the process proven and truffles in the Mediterranean basin suffering from the impacts of climate change, the rewards could be very good indeed. 

 

We’ve currently produced the first cultivated truffles in a number of countries including: England, Scotland, Wales, the Netherlands, Ireland and even Macedonia!
