The trees are being produced at our UKRI funded facility in Scotland and receive constant monitoring and analysis. The mycorrhiza of this species is notoriously hard to identify microscopically, so each tree undergoes a multi-step DNA certification process to make sure that every tree that leaves the facilities is colonized with the right species, and only that species. We actually developed the process to produce T. magnatum trees about 9 years ago, but never released any for sale due to the complications in their cultivation. However, recently we have seen a number of products on the market that we have tested for clients with no truffle mycorrhiza or the wrong truffle mycorrhiza on the root system. For this reason, we are now releasing a small number of certified and DNA-controlled trees for sale on a first-come first-served basis, to those who want a product they can trust. Unlike with black and summer/autumn truffles, cultivation of white truffles should be seen as high risk and success stories are very few and far between. This is probably due to a combination of factors such as poor quality of trees on the market and a complex lifecycle that requires further elucidation. We have written on this previously and despite our current research endeavours, we would say that attempted cultivation of this species should be viewed as highly experimental. We’ve just planted our own UK white truffle orchard and if you are interested and would like to find out some more information then please reach out. We advise reserving your order early to avoid disappointment!
